Hungry Horrors (demo)
HUNGRY HORRORS
A Deckbuilder Steeped in Folklore
In Hungry Horrors, you don’t slay monsters—you feed them. But be careful what’s on the menu. Inspired by British and Irish folklore, this pixel-art deckbuilder challenges you to appease creatures from legend with traditional regional dishes.
This prototype is just the beginning—we’ll be posting updates here, and you can help shape the game by playing and sharing your thoughts. Wishlist on Steam to support development!
FEATURES:
🍽️ FEED, DON’T FIGHT – Every monster has its own tastes. Pick the right dish, or risk becoming dinner yourself.
📜 FOLKLORE-ROOTED DESIGN – Every monster is taken from real myths, and every dish is a traditional recipe.
🎨 HAND-PIXELLED ART – Carefully crafted pixel sprites bring these eerie creatures to life.
🎵 BESPOKE MUSIC – An original soundtrack capturing the eerie, whimsical tone of the game.
🃏 ROGUELITE DECKBUILDING – Build your deck of dishes, manage resources and strategies for each encounter.
A PROTOTYPE WITH BIGGER PLANS
This is an early prototype, exploring the full potential of Hungry Horrors.
Our vision for the full game includes:
• More traditional dishes and artefacts from British and Irish folklore.
• More biomes, each with unique monsters and challenges.
• Expanded game mechanics to deepen strategy.
• Familiars to aid you on your journey.
• Hidden secrets and Easter eggs woven into the world.
• NPCs, quests, and a storyline uncovering what happened to the princess—and how she can save her kingdom.
This prototype is just a taste of what’s to come, and we’re excited to build on it with your support.

too laggy but seems like a good game!
Thank you
laggy? was it a browser version
yea
thank you
it started once I got emergency bullet things
not sure what do yo mean by emergency bullet
i loved it, i need the ful version. It also got a little manatinaus at the end tbh.
7/10
thank you, yes we are working on adding much more variety
Nice twist on the genre, but the curses so far are kinda lame. It would be better if they did a variety of effects and didn't just shut down a random kind of card from your deck.
thank you for playing and thank you for feedback we will look into it
Absolutely fantastic.
Thank you for playing, loving the playthrough...and noting all the feedback
cool game, i enjoyed it :)
It's satisfying to keep your craving combos going, the design and music is very cool, and im excited for a finished version! :D
Thank you so much
Made a video for my channel, I like it. It is not the usual "formula" for a deck builder game. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much for playing and for making video out of it... shame for the buggane death :)
It was great to watch you play, it helps us learn what needs to happen next! Thank you for all the feedback
Anytime, just so you know my brother is making his own video which I'll post in a day or so. He doesn't make commentary but does give notes
amazing! let us know.
Here is the link to his gameplay
I’ve played a bit and I must say, for a prototype this already seems very polished. The visuals and music are very nice!
Some points of feedback:
Thank you so much for playing our game and for taking time to send us feedback.
It would be good to know what graphics card and browser you are using. We had some issues with performance, which hopefully will be addressed in the new patch coming in a couple of days.
When it comes to full-screen closing, we will look into it. The game was always intended to be downloadable and the web version is more of a bonus that we added and need to make sure we can optimise controllers and performance for it better.
Thank you
I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti, and use Firefox. However when I look at task manager, it doesn’t seem like the GPU is being used.
This is exactly the problem; we have noticed it before on rare occasions when GPU is not used, and then the game renders via motherboard GPU and struggles. We will need to find a fix for it.
Thank you
A great discovery! I like the idea of cooking to feed your enemy! Cute pixel art and engaging music too.
Thank you so much :)
There is so much more to come soon.
Suggestions for ideas? I've got one or two that might be worth a spin.
First idea - beating a horror by solely giving it food it loves will gift you a new permanent recipe, one that will be useful or loved much more down the line. (I'm thinking maybe 2-3 areas ahead so it's not spammed/abused)
Second idea - Same as above, but the giant horror for each area not only gives you a permanent recipe, it also gives you a permanent piece of gear. The downisde is, you have to return back to the castle to equip it, instead of equipping it immediately.
Possible final idea - Horrors have a chance to recognise the princess, immmediately halting their progression and allowing you to fill them up and yourself.
Thank you so much for the suggestions, let me address them one by one
1. yes, we had lots of ideas around it.... but it is currently on the "nice to have list", so one day hopefully we will get there
2. This is kinda what artefacts are for... we just need to make sure with a storyline or quests to put emphasis on them
3. Could you elaborate on this? I'm not sure if I fully get it, but it sounds intriguing!
To explain the final point in more detail -
You completely defeat a horror by using food it loves.
Upon doing so, a little marker of some sort will appear in the bestiary on the horror's page.
When that mark appears, there is a chance (I'd say something like 1 in 5 or 1 in 4) that the horror will recognise the princess on an encounter.
When they do, they stop advancing and you can simply keep feeding them and yourself food until the encounter is over.
very interesting... I like it!
first, we doing massive changes to cards but down the line, we are thinking about mechanics like this, definitely going to the ideas pot :)
Fantastic to hear, and can't wait to see what else you come up with!
Can't wait until this game's full release! Brilliant demo!
thank you so much for your support
Wow! Nice work!
thank you!
I really like building up the combos, and the sprites are cute too!
Thank you so much for a kind words
I've given it a short playthrough and I have to say, the simple concept is both fun and entertaining.
It's definitely going to keep me coming back for more, and buying it here once it hits a full release.
thank you so much! we are working on changes and new content for the demo, hopefully it will be even more entertaining and give a idea how full game looks like
Awesome to hear. Can't wait!
Great game!
thank you
Looks pretty cool!
I hope you'll release it on GOG too.
Fun soundtrack :)
Yes, We are going to release it on GOG, but when we are ready with a full game
Thank you!
Is a very good game!
thank you! makes me so happy to hear this, we are still working on it, the demo will change few more times for sure :)
This game is amazing!
Thank you so much!!! This means a lot.
Been following this a while since I saw some art on social media for it I spent an hour playing it yesterday!
thank you!
Can't wait to stream this later!
your stream was great! I have so many notes, and updates made from it. In next couple of weeks you will see some bigger chnages :)
I'm so glad I was helpful!
I had so much fun trying out this game! Deck builders are a challenge for me for sure, but once I started to get the hang of it, I found it so rewarding to get those combos and take out the first dungeon boss!
The music is so fun to listen to and I genuinely enjoyed figuring out what each enemy liked and disliked. It was an adventure and I'm looking forward to playing more and seeing where development of this game goes!
Thank you so much for trying it out. We really do appreciate it! We are already working on updates based on feedback we are getting so please keep it coming.
But most of all we are glad you had fun, as this is most important!
